Recommendations for a successful session.
Arrive to your session prepared and confident! Here are my top tips for a successful appointment.
The standard business look is a suit jacket, dress shirt and tie.
Make sure your jacket and shirt fit you well. A poor fitting jacket or shirt will be obvious in the photos (especially around the neck).
Most importantly, wear something that is comfortable and that makes you look great.
Get your hair cut a few days prior to your appointment. A few days growth gives a more natural look.
Try to shave prior to the appointment, but don’t irritate your skin.
Beards: Clean up and trim.
A fail-safe tip is to pick a top that accentuates your eyes. That’s why jewel tones (blue, green, wine and purple) work so well.
Plain colors work best for headshots since prints and patterns can distract and date your photo.
Avoid wearing tops in flesh tones (cream, beige, pastels, peach or yellow) as they will blend your face into your clothes.
Try to stay away from reds and oranges, but there are always exceptions to the rules (see below).
A modest V-neck is universally flattering because it lengthens the neck.
Try to pick something that falls well on your shoulders and flatters your neckline.
Opt for tops with sleeves opposed to short sleeves.
Fine to medium gauge knits work really well too because they introduce textural interest.
If you choose to wear a jacket, pair it with a collarless top. This is modern and keeps the neckline simple and sleek.
Crisply ironed shirts by themselves frame the face really well.
Choose simple earrings and necklaces.
Smaller is better. They keep the focus on the face. Big statement jewelry will date your photos.
If you normally wear glasses, please bring them. Almost all glasses have an anti-glare coating now so reflections shouldn’t be an issue.
Schedule your hair appointment at least a week prior to your session. Give your dye or trim a few days to settle in.
Wearing your hair down with some volume or loose curls is usually the most flattering.
Wear what you would for a nice evening out. Well done, but not overdone.
Avoid overly glossy or shimmery makeup as it will catch the light and be distracting.
If you normally don’t wear makeup, your pictures will look better if you at least wear foundation. This will help even out your skin tone.
Bring extra powder, as you’ll want to reapply during the shoot to avoid shine.
